Bruins left wing Brad Marchand suspected that the Florida Panthers would be a tough first-round opponent in the Stanley Cup playoffs.Marchand’s suspicions were confirmed in the third period on Wednesday night’s 6-3 loss to the Panthers in Game 2 of the series at the TD Garden. The Panthers tied the series at 1-1 and will host the Bruins in Game 3 on Friday night (7:30) at FLA Live Arena in Sunrise, Fla.“We knew it was going to be a hard series and definitely not one that we expected to walk through,” said Marchand. “They play well at home and we have our work cut for us and we have to make sure we bring our best.“It’s one game at a time. Well forget about this one now and regroup. But if we don’t bring our best game it is going to be a rough trip so we have to make sure we are ready for them.”Marchand had a rough night in the event summary despite scoring the Bruins’ first goal while short-handed that tied the game 1-1 at 12:13 of the second period.Marchand logged 19:43 first-...Winderman’s view: Heat get cut down to size, come up small vs. Bucks

Observations and other notes of interest from Wednesday night’s 138-122 Miami Heat NBA playoff loss to the Milwaukee Bucks:– This is what happens when you feature a rotation of Lilliputians– Eventually you get cut down to size.– What was most humbling Wednesday night was the Heat got cut down to size with the Bucks playing without the length of their leading man.– Which does not bode well when Giannis Antetokounmpo makes his return.– If the Bucks even need him in this matchup.– There was a reason the Heat got Dewayne Dedmon in advance of their series with the Bucks in 2021.– A reason they worked so extensively with Omer Yurtseven during October’s training camp.– A reason Cody Zeller was added in February before the buyout deadline.– But if you don’t play that height, it doesn’t matter.– So the Bucks took it inside.– Which opened the outside game.– And then piled it on from there.– W...No Giannis, no problem for Bucks in 138-122 thrashing of Heat that evens series 1-1

This is what happens when you are a No. 1 seed playing a No. 8 seed:You don’t need your superstar to win.So no Giannis Antetokounmpo for the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday night, no problem in their 138-122 victory over the Miami Heat at Fiserv Forum, the most points ever in a playoff game against the Heat. And with that, a 1–1 tie in the best-of-seven Eastern Conference opening-round series that now shifts to the Kaseya Center for the next two.In a dominant exhibition of their superior depth of talent, the Bucks pushed to a 32-point first-half lead and made it easy for Antetokounmpo to rest easier with his lower-back contusion. For the Heat, there were 25 points from Jimmy Butler and 18 from Bam Adebayo, with both sitting out the fourth quarter. But with starting shooting guard Tyler Herro sidelined with the broken hand sustained in Game 1, there simply was not enough competitive depth. The perspective at the outset said all that arguably needed to be said about pedigree, wi...Twins hammer Corey Kluber, Red Sox in 10-4 rout

The Red Sox haven’t gotten the Corey Kluber of yore and lore in 2023.Through his first three starts of the season, the 37-year-old righty allowed 10 earned runs on 13 hits, including four home runs, walked six batters, and struck out 13.His fourth start wasn’t an improvement. Over five innings, the veteran hurler allowed seven earned runs on six hits, walked two, struck out four, gave up two home runs, and hit two batters. He threw 103 pitches, 65 for strikes.“It’s tough,” Alex Cora said after the 10-4 loss to the Minnesota Twins. “It’s actually the walks all that stuff that come before the big swings, right? When we pitch ahead in the first inning, we do a good job. When we’re behind, we’re getting crushed.”Kluber issued a leadoff walk to Twins leadoff man Max Kepler and gave up a double to Byron Buxton before letting Edouard Julien take him yard. An immediate 3-0 hole for the home team. The starting rotation has an ERA over 11 ...San Diego Border Patrol surpasses 100,000 encounters as of October

SAN DIEGO - Border crossings in the San Diego sector are on the rise, up by over 30% from last April with just over 100,000 illegal encounters made in the past six months. This comes as the end of the Title 42 approaches next month. "We’ve seen an increase over the course of the last couple of years but this year up to date, we’re at 109,274 apprehensions," shared Agent Angel Moreno with the U.S. Border Patrol San Diego Sector. These stats follow a recent slew of African and Middle Eastern migrants amassing near San Ysidro just last week. According to Customs and Border Protection, nearly 60% encountered in the San Diego Sector were from countries other than Mexico, with single adults making up 77% of these encounters reaching 84,620 individuals. The uptick comes as Border Patrol Agents stress limited manpower; an obstacle agents tell us they're working to address. “As an organization, we try to help each other out as much as we can so we try to shift some of those apprehensions to ...Rules of the Road: California license plate rules

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — Filming on the Western movie “Rust” could resume this week in Montana, the production company said Wednesday, in the aftermath of the fatal shooting of a cinematographer during a rehearsal with actor Alec Baldwin on the original production in New Mexico.Baldwin will continue his involvement as an actor and coproducer, and Rust Move Productions attorney Melina Spadone said via a representative that filming will restart Thursday at the Yellowstone Film Ranch. The production company finalized a settlement last month with New Mexico workplace safety regulars over “serious” violations, agreeing to a $100,000 fine to resolve a scathing safety review that detailed unheeded complaints and misfires on set before cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was shot and killed in October 2021.Plans to resume filming were outlined last year by widower Matthew Hutchins in a proposed settlement to a wrongful death lawsuit that would make him an executive producer on a rebooted “Rust.”Pro...Rare solar eclipse to cross remote Australia, Indonesia

A rare solar eclipse will cross over remote parts of Australia, Indonesia and East Timor on Thursday. The lucky few in the path of the hybrid solar eclipse will either get plunged into the darkness of a total eclipse or they’ll see a “ring of fire” as the sun peeks out from behind the moon. The eclipse path will swoop from the Indian Ocean to the Pacific Ocean, mostly over water. For those viewing the total eclipse, it will last a little over a minute.Such celestial events happen about once every decade: The last one was in 2013 and the next one isn’t until 2031. They occur when Earth is in the “sweet spot” so the moon and the sun are almost the exact same size in the sky, said NASA solar expert Michael Kirk.At some points, the moon is a little closer and blocks out the sun in a total eclipse. But when the moon is a little farther away, it lets some of the sun’s light peek out in an annular eclipse.“It’s a crazy phenomenon,” Kirk said. “You’re actually watching the moon get lar...Latest news
