CHICAGO (AP) — An Indiana school district did not violate a former music teacher’s rights by pushing him to resign after the man refused to use transgender students’ names and gender pronouns, a federal appeals court said in an order released Friday. The decision from the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a prior ruling in the case by a federal judge. According to court records, John Kluge was hired in 2014 as the music and orchestra teacher for Brownsburg High School about 20 miles (32 kilometers) northwest of Indianapolis. In 2017, district officials began requiring the high school’s teachers to use the names and pronouns listed in the school’s official student database, where changes were permitted with letters from a student’s parent and a doctor. Kluge told the school’s principal, Bret Daghe, on the first day of classes for the 2017 school year that he had a religious objection to using transgender students’ names and pronouns. BIRMINGHAM, England (AP) — Aston Villa put on a show for its royal visitors in a 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest that lifted the team into sixth place in the English Premier League on Saturday.Prince William, who is known to be a Villa fan, attended with his oldest child, Prince George, and saw Ollie Watkins continue his hot streak with a stoppage-time goal to seal victory. It was Watkins’ ninth goal in his last 11 games, adding to Bertrand Traore’s strike early in the second half.Villa has won six of its last seven matches and is in real contention for European qualification, with the Europa League firmly in the sights of manager Unai Emery — a serial winner of the competition with Sevilla and Villarreal.Emery mustn’t have thought this was possible when he took over from Steven Gerrard in November. Villa is on course for their best finish since 2010.For Forest, an eighth game without a win returned the team to the bottom three for the first time since January. NEW YORK (AP) — Aliyah Boston has been the consensus No. 1 pick in the WNBA draft all season. The Indiana Fever, who own the top choice, just had to wait for the South Carolina star to make it official she was going to enter this year’s draft. Boston had the chance to return to South Carolina for her COVID season, but opted to enter Monday night’s draft instead.“I think Aliyah Boston is a legitimate first pick option,” Fever general manager Lin Dunn said on a conference call. “I’ve watched her play very closely this year. Her size, her basketball IQ, her character, her leadership skills. She just brings an enormous amount to the table, and I really think she’s going to have — whether she’s picked first, second or third, she’s going to have an immediate impact on this league.”Boston was a three-time All-America selection and earned AP Player of the Year honors in 2022 as a junior. AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) — No one had an easier time Saturday morning at the Masters than Brooks Koepka. He didn’t have to play, and he still had the lead going into a cold, soggy and brutally difficult weekend at Augusta National.Jon Rahm did remarkably well to stay close. Tiger Woods managed to survive, tying the Masters record by making the cut for the 23rd consecutive time.Cameron Young summed it for some three dozen players who were forced to handle the rain, the cold and a course that played longer than it ever has.“It’s basically impossible,” Young said. “I really don’t know what you’re supposed to do.”Rahm played the entire back nine in severe conditions and finished off a 3-under 69 to get within two shots of Koepka, who was among the fortunate to get his second round out of the way on Friday before the bad weather moved in and changed everything.Temperatures dipped below 50 degrees Fahrenheit (10 degrees Celsius).
