Oakland: Sig-alert issued after police activity closes I-580 lanes

OAKLAND — The California Highway Patrol closed at least two lanes of westbound Interstate 580 in East Oakland after a police response to an unspecified incident Thursday, authorities said.Shortly after 2:15 p.m., CHP officers responded to a report of a driver seeing a vehicle flipped on its side in westbound lanes east of the Keller Avenue off-ramp, with traffic stopped behind them.The CHP issued a Sig-alert at 2:35 p.m., saying that the roadway’s Nos. 3 and 4, or right-hand lanes, were blocked. There was no estimated time of reopening, and Interstate 880 was recommended as an alternate route.According to an Oakland Fire Department spokesman, firefighters were dispatched to the incident but cancelled en route. (KRON) -- All lanes are blocked on I-580 westbound in Oakland Thursday afternoon due to police activity, according to a 511 alert. Officials say at least one vehicle was overturned on the freeway east of Keller Avenue.The overturned vehicle is related to a shooting, officials told KRON4. There were multiple injuries reported, but it is unknown at this time how many. As of 3:50 p.m., the westbound left lanes are open, and the right lanes remain blocked. SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- The San Francisco County Jail will be the first in the nation to provide inmates with free access to content-rich tablet computers, according to the City and County of San Francisco. The initiative, described as a joint effort between the City and County, the SF County Sheriff's Office, and the SF Public Library, will expand on a pilot program first implemented by the SF Sheriff's Office in 2014.The original pilot program was designed to enhance education and learning for people in custody. One person was killed in a collision involving four vehicles early Thursday morning on eastbound Interstate Highway 580 in Livermore, according to the California Highway Patrol.First, a Ford Mustang rear-ended a Ford F-350 pickup truck around 3:30 a.m. in the far-left lane on eastbound Highway 580 at First Street. No one was injured in the crash and the driver of the pickup moved the vehicle to the right shoulder, CHP officials said.A Chevrolet pickup truck was then allegedly traveling over the speed limit in the third lane from the left, according to the CHP. The driver looked left to change lanes, switched and saw the Mustang ahead, CHP officials said.The driver was unable to brake, and the truck crashed into the right front passenger door of the Mustang, according to the CHP.
