Early Hall of Fame votes reveal strong support for former Twins star Joe Mauer It will still be another month until Joe Mauer finds out if he’s ticketed for Cooperstown in July, but the former Twins catcher has garnered strong support on Hall of Fame ballots revealed publicly thus far, a good sign for his chances at entry, be it this year or in the future.X (formerly Twitter) user Ryan Thibodaux (@NotMrTibbs) and his team, who track the publicly revealed ballots, has Mauer currently receiving 76.3 percent of the votes as of Saturday morning with 38 ballots revealed. That, of course, is a very small percentage of voters — just 9.9 percent — but is a good early indicator for Mauer, who would need to receive at least 75 percent of the vote to receive the call from the Hall of Fame.Mauer, whose candidacy is being voted on for the first time this year, has received support on 29 of 38 ballots tracked thus far. Per Thibodaux’s tracker, an estimated 384 ballots will be cast with a player needing around 288 votes for entry.Long-tenured members of the Baseball Writers ...

‘The Boys in the Boat’ gives the Hollywood treatment to rowing during an Olympic year COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — The journey from nowhere to an Olympic gold medal is a tale as old as time.Just as well-worn, but far less explored, are the stories about great athletes who realize they can’t make it anywhere unless they have a way to bankroll the trip.“The Boys in the Boat” is Hollywood and director George Clooney’s way of stringing those plot lines together. Club World Cup let visitors see how Saudi Arabia wants to change ahead of 2034 World Cup JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia (AP) — In Saudi Arabia this week to work at the Club World Cup, seeing a woman driving a car on the busy roads of Jeddah was proving elusive. The kingdom’s ban on women drivers was lifted in 2018 — a key modernizing reform in a long-time ultraconservative society — yet first-hand evidence was missing for nearly four full days at a soccer event that was an early milestone on the road to the men’s World Cup in 2034.Spending one hour each day in taxis is easily done in a city with almost no public transport for more than five million people. A ride was requested on Thursday evening on a Middle East booking app to pick up at the five-star hotel where FIFA stayed. The driver of the economy grade sedan that arrived was a woman in her 20s, wearing western clothes and her head uncovered. Her avatar on the Jeeny app was not a photograph but a purple and white image of a hijab head covering. The skeptical bubble of a western visitor was popped and the frequent claims by Saud...
