BUTARE, Rwanda (AP) — Kelechi Iheanacho equalized to salvage a 1-1 draw for Nigeria against Zimbabwe on Sunday as both sides opened their World Cup qualifying campaigns with two consecutive draws.Zimbabwe, hosting games in Rwanda because of a lack of suitable stadiums at home, took the lead in the 26th minute through a free kick by forward Walter Musona, who hammered the ball into the top corner from 30 yards out.The better side in the first half, Zimbabwe appeared unfazed by the opposition’s pedigree, knocking the ball around confidently and defending solidly when out of possession.Nigeria came into the game in the second half, though Zimbabwe also had chances to win the game.Leicester City forward Iheanacho, a second half substitute for the Super Eagles, scored the equalizer in the 67th with a clinical finish inside the box after he was set up by captain Moses Simon. In their opening matches, Zimbabwe drew 0-0 away to Rwanda on Wednesday while Nigeria was surprisingly held to a 1-1...Serbia qualifies for Euro 2024 after 2-2 draw with Bulgaria

The Red Sox will have to work quickly to reinforce their starting rotation, as their aggressive former president of baseball operations has already taken a top arm off the board. On Sunday, Dave Dombrowski’s Philadelphia Phillies and Aaron Nola agreed to terms on a seven-year deal worth $172 million.Nola, 30, has spent his entire career in red pinstripes thus far and seems destined to become the rare Major Leaguer of his era to continue that to the end. The Phillies drafted him seventh overall in 2014, and he debuted just 13 months later. Over nine years, he owns a career 3.72 ERA, 3.38 FIP, and 1.129 WHIP in the regular season. He’s finished between third and seventh in National League Cy Young voting three times since 2018 when he also became a first-time All-Star and finished 13th in the NL MVP race. For a Phillies team that has undergone immense turmoil and transformation over the last decade, Nola has been the rare constant, so it comes as little surprise that they pulled out all...Fires in Brazil threaten jaguars, houses and plants in the world’s largest tropical wetlands

POCONE, BRAZIL (AP) — Firefighters in Brazil’s Pantanal wetlands earlier this month celebrated the end of the fire season on Facebook, saying in a Nov. 7 post that “it is a relief for everyone who lives in the region.”They spoke too soon. In the first two weeks of November, fires fueled by unusually dry and hot weather destroyed nearly 770,000 hectares (1.9 million acres) of the world’s largest tropical wetlands, preliminary figures from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro show. This accounts for 65% of the damage done by fires in the region this year.Brazil’s National Institute for Space Research, a federal agency, detected 3,380 fires in the Pantanal in the first 17 days of November, compared to just 69 in the same period a year ago, and well beyond previous fire season records dating back to 1998.The Pantanal holds thousands of plant and animal species, including 159 mammals, and it abounds with jaguars, according to the World Wildlife Fund. KINSHASA, Congo (AP) — Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi and a politician hoping to unseat him next month launched their campaigns Sunday as the incumbent leader faces ongoing violence in eastern Congo and a divided field of opposition candidates.Opposition party representatives who met in South Africa in recent days failed to unite behind a single challenger to Tshisekedi for the country’s Dec. 20 presidential election. The candidates represented at the talks included Martin Fayulu, a former oil executive who lost to Thisekedi five years ago; businessman Moise Katumbi; Nobel Peace Prize winner Denis Mukwege; former Prime Minister Matata Ponyo; and Kassai legislator Delly Sesanga. In a speech to supporters at Martyrs’ Stadium in Kinshasa on Sunday, the incumbent president accused Rwanda’s leader, President Paul Kageme, of destabilizing Congo. Congo has alleged that Rwandan forces are backing M23 rebels in the country’s east, a claim Rwanda denies.“I have br...Federal NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh blasts Trudeau, Poilievre at B.C. convention

Police said that the man, identified as Perkins, later threatened the driver and “turned the gun toward one of the officers.” Perkins’ family has disputed the police version of events.“I found reason to believe that p...Latest news
